Quad Expands Indo-Pacific Security Push With New Maritime and Critical Minerals Initiatives
The Quad grouping expanded cooperation in critical minerals, energy, maritime surveillance, and port infrastructure during a foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on May 26, 2026. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new Indo-Pacific initiatives amid concerns over China’s growing military posturing in the region.
The new measures were announced following a meeting of the grouping’s foreign ministers in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by S. Jaishankar and attended by Marco Rubio, Penny Wong and Toshimitsu Motegi.
In his media statement, Mr. Rubio said the Quad meeting decided to launch an Indo-Pacific Maritime Surveillance Cooperation Initiative. He also announced the expansion of the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness Initiative among the Quad nations.
Mr. Rubio further said the Quad has decided to roll out a new initiative aimed at boosting port infrastructure in the Pacific Islands, reinforcing the grouping’s strategic focus on the Indo-Pacific region as tensions continue to rise over China’s increasing military activities.
The announcements marked a significant expansion of the Quad’s security and strategic coordination framework, with critical minerals, energy cooperation, maritime surveillance, and infrastructure development emerging as key pillars of the grouping’s broader Indo-Pacific agenda.
